Private John McKergin

John McKergin was born near Portrush, County Antrim, on 28 September 1892, son of servant Mary McKergan.

By 1911 he was working as a hairdresser and living with his mother and two younger brothers James and David at 55 Beresford Street, Shankill.

McKergan enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Ballymena on 4 September 1914 (No.1130). He embarked for France on 1 May 1915 as part of D Squadron.

While in France McKergan fell ill and returned home for treatment on 23 February 1916. On 24 October that year he was discharged as 'no longer physically fit for war service' (Para 392 xvi King's Regulations). His discharge papers recorded that he was "honest, sober, industrious, hard working and thoroughly reliable."
