Born Garvary, County Fermanagh. Son of Margaret Irwin of Feddins Gavary, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh. Enlisted Tempo.

Embarked for France on 17 August 1914 as part of A Squadron, North Irish Horse.

Died in France on 2 March 1915, aged 25.

Buried at Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave I.A.47.

The gravestone inscription reads:

626 PRIVATE

W. IRWIN

NORTH IRISH HORSE

2ND MARCH 1915 AGE 25
