Private John Ellison

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present.

John Ellison enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 10 and 13 August 1914 (No.998). Just days later, on 20 August, he embarked for France with C Squadron, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

In June 1916 C Squadron combined with F Squadron and the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron to form the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to X Corps until September 1917, when the regiment was disbanded and its men transferred to the infantry. Ellison, however, was transferred to the Labour Corps (on 17 October). He was issued regimental number 429523 and posted to No.180 Labour Company.

At a later date, probably in 1919, he transferred to, or re-enlisted in, the Corps of Hussars (No.80642). He was still serving with the Hussars at the end of 1919.
