Private Ernest Glass

Ernest Glass was born on 4 October 1891 at Campsil, Omagh, County Tyrone, the fourth of seven children of saddler James Glass and his wife Elizabeth (née Neilly). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 18 Market Street, Omagh, with his parents, three younger siblings, and an aunt, and working as a saddler.

In February 1912 he appeared before the Omagh Petty Sessions following an altercation in the town (see below).

Glass enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Omagh on 30 October 1912 (No.745).

On 16 May 1914 he emigrated to the United States, together with his mother, two brothers and a sister. (His father had died at Omagh five months earlier.)

Because he had not sought a discharge from the North Irish Horse, he was recorded as being absent from the regimental training camp the following month, and his name appeared on the absentees and deserters list in the Police Gazette of 23 June 1914.

On 7 July 1917 he married Margaret Ella Hooper in New York.
