Lance Corporal Francis Jennings

 

Francis Jennings was born on 8 April 1878 at Terminnan, Downpatrick, County Down, youngest of seven children of farmer Francis Jennings and his wife Margaret (formerly Curlett).

He enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 15 November 1915 (No.1879). In 1916 or 1917 he embarked for France, where he joined the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment in the field.

In September 1917 the regiment was dismounted and most of its officers and men were transferred to the 9th (Service) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers – which was renamed the 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion. Like most of the men, Jennings was transferred to the battalion on 20 September. He was issued a new regimental number – 41338.

In 1919 Jennings was awarded a Military Medal.
