Private Robert Magee
The only evidence of this man's military service discovered to date is contained in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919, which states that he served as a Trooper in the North Irish Horse, lived at Ardstraw, County Tyrone, and was a member of the Ardstraw Congregation.
Robert Henry Magee was born on 26 September 1901 at Churchtown, Strabane, County Tyrone, the second of eleven children of farmer William John Magee and his wife Sarah Jane (née Moore). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Ardstraw with his parents and six siblings.
Given his age, he probably enlisted in the North Irish Horse in 1917 or 1918, seeing out the war at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim before being demobilised in 1919.
In March 1922 he emigrated to New Zealand. He married Margaret Jane McNaughton at Sydney, New South Wales, on 31 December 1928. He died in Auckland Hospital on 20 November 1990 and was buried in the Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank.
