Private Francis McClure
The only evidence of this man's military service discovered to date is contained in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919, which states that he served as a Private in the North Irish Horse, lived in Drumacloghan, and was a member of the Ramelton Second Congregation, Letterkenny Presbytery.
Francis McClure was born on 16 June 1897 at Drumacloghan, Ramelton, County Donegal, the third of eight children of farmer Nathaniel McClure and his wife Elizabeth (née McElhinney). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Drumacloghan with his recently widowed mother and his siblings.
Nothing is known of when he enlisted in the North Irish Horse, but it appears he did not serve overseas during the war.
McClure's younger brother James also served, as a Sapper, Telegraph Department, Royal Navy, according to the PCI Roll. In a report following his death in July 1924, the Londonderry Standard reported that he "served with the colours in Russia during the war, joining up shortly after his seventeenth birthday."
