Private Alfred Charles McClean

 

Alfred Charles McClean was born on 18 August 1894 at Roughan, east of Ballymena, County Antrim, the fourth of six children of labourer James McClean and his wife Matilda (née McMichael). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 8 Casement Street, Ballymena, with his parents and three of his four surviving siblings, and working as a linen weaver.

It is not known when McClean enlisted in the North Irish Horse, and it is probable that he did not see overseas service during the war.

On 13 October 1919 he married Jeannie McKay Wallace in the Kells Presbyterian Church, County Antrim. Soon after he was working as a railway porter. He died in the Ballymena Hospital on 18 December 1974 and was buried in the Connor New Cemetery.

His name is included on the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919.
