Sergeant Alexander Robert McConnell

Alexander Robert McConnell was born on 26 October 1891 at Big Isle, Manorcunningham, County Donegal, the ninth of eleven children of farm labourer, later caretaker, James McConnell and his wife Margaret Ann (nee Moss). By 1911 he was living with his family at Big Isle and working as an agricultural labourer.

McConnell enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 12 March 1909 (No.316). By 1914 he had risen to the rank of sergeant.

He was mobilised on the outbreak of war in August 1914, but was found to be physically unfit for service. On 17 October that year he was discharged under paragraph 392 xvi(a) King's Regulations.

McConnell died of tuberculosis at Manorcunningham on 24 November 1925.

Sergeant McConnell's younger brother Frederick McConnell also served in the North Irish Horse. He saw service in France in August 1914 but was discharged suffering from tuberculosis later that year.
