Private John McGuigan

 

 

John McGuigan, a hardware merchant of Newry, enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 13 October 1914 (Service No.1307). He was aged 21 at the time.

He left for France with F Squadron in November 1915. In September 1917 he was transferred to D Company of the 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers, when his regiment was dismounted and absorbed into the infantry (Service No.41237). Following the Battle of Cambrai he was evacuated suffering from trench fever. In July 1918 he transferred to the Army Service Corps at the Curragh, and a year later was discharged to Z Class, Army Reserve.

He died on 17 March 1954.
