Private William Mitchell
The only evidence of this man's military service discovered to date is contained in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919, which states that he served as a Trooper in the North Irish Horse, lived in Pullyernan, County Tyrone, and was a member of the Castlederg Second Congregation, Donegal Presbytery.
William Mitchell was born on 23 September 1896 at Pullyernan, the second of two children of farmer William Mitchell and his wife Letitia (née McCay). His mother died when he was just two years old. At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Pulleyernan with his father, step-mother, sister and five half-siblings.
It is not known at present when he enlisted in the North Irish Horse, and there is no record that he served overseas with the regiment. He may have served through the war at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim.
After the war Mitchell emigrated to New Zealand. On 4 January 1924 he married Agnes Ursula Penny in Palmerston, Otago. He died in Dunedin Hospital, New Zealand, on 7 March 1964.
