Sergeant Samuel Orr
The only evidence of this man's military service discovered to date is contained in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919, which states that he served as a Sergeant in the North Irish Horse, lived at 1 Welland Street, Belfast, and was a member of the Strand, Sydenham Congregation.
Samuel Orr was born on 24 December 1876 at Ballyhackamore, Belfast, the fifth of nine children of blacksmith Robert Orr and his wife Elizabeth (née Young). His father died when he was just eleven years old. At the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Welland Street with his mother and three of his siblings, and working as a blacksmith.
It is not known at present when Orr enlisted in the North Irish Horse, but it appears he did not serve with the regiment overseas (probably on account of his age).
By 1946 he was living at 153 Albertbridge Road, Belfast. He died in the Belfast City Hospital on 28 February that year.
One of Orr's brothers, Tedford Orr, also served in the military. Having enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1902, he served in France from 18 August 1914 to 13 March 1915, when he returned home with an injured ankle. He was discharged six months later.
