Private Geoffrey Shaw
The only reference to this man's service in the North Irish Horse is in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919, which shows him with the rank of Lieutenant, from Greenisland, belonging to the Whiteabbey Congregation, Belfast Presbytery.
Geoffrey Shaw was born in mid-1899 in Bury, Lancashire, the second of two children of flax machinery draughtsman Peter Shaw and his wife Annie ((née Goulburn). After 1901 the family moved to Belfast. In 1911 they were living a 74 Woodvale Road, Belfast, but soon after moved to Pentland, Silverstream, Greenisland.
Given his age, he probably enlisted in the North Irish Horse in 1917 or 1918, seeing out the war at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim before being demobilised in 1919. I have found no evidence that he was commissioned as an officer, as suggested in the PCI Roll of Honour.
Shaw's brother, Harold Goulburn Shaw, also served in the North Irish Horse during the war, before being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.
