Private John Wallace
John Wallace was born on 31 August 1878 at Tulnacross, Lambeg, County Down, one of at least five children of bleacher Wilson Wallace and his wife Jane (née Taylor). At the time of the 1901 Census he was living at Lisnatrunk Big, Drumbeg, County Down, with his recently-widowed father and three of his siblings, and working as a shoemaker.
Wallace served in South Africa during the Boer War as part of the Third Contingent of the Imperial Yeomanry (see details here).
According to the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919, he served during the First World War as a Private in the North Irish Horse. It appears unlikely that he served overseas, and in mid- 1917 he was discharged, presumably due to ill-health, and was granted an army pension.
He died at 131 Vernon Street, Belfast, on 5 March 1920, and was buried in the City Cemetery – Glenalina Extension. (According to the PCI Roll of Honour he 'died of wounds', but this is not borne out by his death certificate.)
