Castles transferred to the new 60th Company in South Africa when the original 60th returned to England. He was promoted to corporal on 8 March 1901 and sergeant on 21 November 1901. On 19 April 1902, however, he was convicted and sentenced by a Field General Court Martial to be reduced to the ranks of corporal.

Around 1906 he emigrated to the United States.
