On 30 June 1900 the Lurgan Mail published a letter from Private John Hamilton Sinclair, who reported that:
When a man goes sick he is told that he is only scheming and must get up and do his work. A poor chap called Gargan was found dead in his tent this morning. He had been very ill with dysentery for about a fortnight, and yesterday he was sent out as a mounted orderly, and it was too much for him. We found him dead at about half-past six, and he is to be buried at half-past one to-day.
