Waddell initially enlisted in the 46th (Belfast) Company but transferred to the 60th (Belfast) Company before embarkation for South Africa.
On 16 February 1901 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry. Posted to the Unattached List, he resigned his commission on 25 May.
He married Edith Kate Morris in Eastbourne, Sussex, in 1902. At the time of the 1911 Census theywere living at 54 Speldhurst Road, Bedford Park W, London, with their daughter, Charles working as an insurance surveyor. He died on 2 December 1928 in the West Middlesex Hospital, London.
