The Irish Imperial Yeomanry
During the Anglo-Boer War from 1900 to 1902, seventeen companies of Imperial Yeomanry were raised in Ireland for service in South Africa. Six of these proceeded to South Africa as part of the first yeomanry contingent in 1900, five in the second contingent in 1901, and another six made up the 'Irish Horse' battalion in the third contingent in 1902.
Just over 2,300 men enlisted for service in these companies, commanded by more than 100 officers.
Some 81 lost their lives: 37 being killed in action or died of wounds; 37 due to illness (mostly dysentery/ enteric fever); and 7 as a result of various accidents.
